The sun is back out and the NASCAR Cup Series is racing again in Music City

LEBANON, Tenn. -- Just as scores of artists have come looking to make it in the country music business, so too have many NASCAR racers gone through Nashville to try and reach the highest levels of stock car racing. Now, the tradition of Cup racing in Nashville is renewed with the fourth annual running of the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway, right at the precipice of one of the season's most pivotal points.

For drivers who remain winless in 2024, the pressure is on at the edge of July to get to Victory Lane and ensure they won't have to sweat out the summer months to see whether or not they'll qualify for the playoffs. That group includes defending Nashville winner Ross Chastain, who one year ago took home a Gibson Guitar and his first win of the year to ensure his playoff spot.

Christopher Bell led much of the day before a passing storm brought out the red flag with 136 of 300 laps complete. Rain and lightning passed through very quickly, but the sun is back out, the rain delay is now over, and the stars of the Cup Series are back after it with more than half the race still to run.

Coverage of the Ally 400 is on NBC and streaming on fubo (try for free).

Joey Logano and Chase Briscoe are on fumes. Zane Smith in third last pitted at Lap 245. The cars at the front who pitted on Lap 301 are now Ryan Preece in fourth, Tyler Reddick in fifth, Bubba Wallace in sixth and Chris Buescher in seventh.

Elliott runs out of fuel on the restart. LaJoie doesn't get going! For the lead, it's Logano and Chase Briscoe side-by-side! Logano runs him up the racetrack AND THERE'S ANOTHER CAUTION! Josh Berry crashed in Turn 4 and we're headed to a FIFTH OVERTIME!

Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. come to pit road under caution. They can't make it.

Joey Logano stays out and takes the race lead. Chase Briscoe, who has three more laps of fuel by virtue of pitting at Lap 224, is second. Corey LaJoie, who pitted at Lap 245, is third. The car with the most fuel in the field is now -- of all drivers -- rookie Zane Smith in fourth.

The only driver in the top five who has won a race this season in Chase Elliott. This has the potential to completely unend the playoff picture as we get set to take the green for our fourth overtime.

Kyle Larson stumbles, Kyle Busch crashes, and we are going to QUADRUPLE overtime. Busch's suspension is destroyed and this nightmare stretch for him continues.

Busch is out of his car and gives a sarcastic victory bow to the crowd.

No takers to pit road under this caution. Hamlin chooses the inside and Larson chooses the outside again.

Bubba Wallace, who is probably the only car who can absolutely make it to the end on fuel, will line up in Row 4. Corey LaJoie, who pitted at Lap 245, will line up in Row 5.

Here we go -- Triple Overtime!

No takers to pit road under caution. It's Hamlin, Larson, Truex, Busch and Logano the top five. Interestingly, Busch was given his spots back after having to slow down for Chastain in that turn one crash.

Hamlin to the inside and Larson to the outside at the choose zone. Green flag next time by.

Ross Chastain, Ty Gibbs, Tyler Reddick, John Hunter Nemechek, Kyle Busch, William Byron, Austin Dillon and Daniel Hemric were all among the cars involved in that crash. Chastain is now out of his car, and his race is over.

This puts Denny Hamlin in a vulnerable position -- Crew chief Chris Gabehart told him that he has enough fuel for one overtime restart, but not two. The first four cars last pitted at Lap 221, Chase Briscoe last pitted at Lap 224, and Corey LaJoie is now the first car who pitted on Lap 245 in seventh. He's followed by Carson Hocevar and Zane Smith in 11th.

Bubba Wallace is now up to 11th after pitting in overtime.

This is the absolute last thing that any of the drivers who were trying to make it to the end on fuel needed. We are heading to Overtime.

The pits are open. Wallace, Reddick, Buescher, Haley, Dillon, Suarez, Berry, Heim, and a couple of others pit. Wallace couldn't make it past the scheduled distance.

Hamlin has run down Chastain. Chastain moves around to try and break Hamlin's momentum -- It works in Turns 1 and 2, but not in 3 and 4. Hamlin is trying to get a run off the high side and it's working with momentum off the corner.

Chastain is able to hang on by about two carlengths for right now. 10 laps to go next time by.

15 laps to go. The gap is now just over half a second. Hamlin is there and now it's a cat and mouse game as to whether Chastain can position his car to affect the airflow to Hamlin's car and if Hamlin can adjust.

The gap is now under one second. Hamlin is closing in. But as we've seen today already, catching him is one thing -- passing him is another.

Coming up on 15 laps to go.
